Account of the Origin and Organization of the states of Western Sudan

Paul Constantin Meyer, Account of the Origin and Organisation of the States of the Western Sudan. Translated from the German by Major E. Agar, R.E., Colonial Office, AFRICAN (WEST) No. 541, February 1898. The original German has not been identified, and the Colonial Office Confidential translation omits the original Introduction and the first chapter that provides an overview of the exploration of the western Sudan. The reports of the various travellers who were in the western Sudan are also omitted. Nonetheless, Meyer provides an overview of the Sokoto Caliphate, including sections on Kano, Adamawa, Gwandu and Nupe. There are also sections on the western Sudan, including Massina, Segu, Samory, Tiëbà, Mossi and Gurma.
